Travel Information

Discounted Airfare for Conference Participants:

Northwest Airlines is providing a discounted airfare for all participants of the Strings 2000 Conference. Please mention the following Worldfile number when making your reservation.

Domestic:10% discount (60 days in advance)
  5% discount (subsequently)
International:10% discount

Domestic travelers will receive a 10% discount on flights booked 60 days or more prior to the date of departure, and a 5% discount after that. These rates include travel from Canada. Domestic flights may be booked by calling 800-328-1111 during normal business hours.

International travelers will receive a 10% discount on first class (except -2F type fares), world business class, normal economy, special economy, APEX or super APEX fares. Promotional and short term sales are not included. This discount applies to Northwest/KLM flights, and some restrictions apply. Participants should call their local Northwest/KLM reservations office in their country of origin for this discount.

Airport Information:

Detroit Metropolitan Airport (DTW, aka Metro-Wayne County) is the closest airport servicing all major airline carriers domestically and internationally. It is located approximately 25 miles east of Ann Arbor.

Taxis, shuttles and rental car agencies are available. Estimated shuttle cost is approximately $30 round trip, taxi fare approximately $45 one-way; both forms of transportation accept cash or credit cards. Commuter Transportation provides hourly shuttles between the airport and Ann Arbor. Domestic travelers will find the Commuter Transportation stand in the baggage claim area. International travelers, after proceeding through Customs, will find a courtesy phone located in the lower level baggage claim area. Reservations are not required from the airport to Ann Arbor, however, reservations are necessary from Ann Arbor to Metro Airport. Commuter Transportation can be reached at (800) 488-7433. Shuttles or taxis are recommended. Driving time is approximately 30-45 minutes.

Currency Exchange:

There is a currency exchange booth in the lobby of the International Terminal at Detroit Metro Airport. A limited selection of foreign currencies may be exchanged. Participants are encouraged to purchase travelers checks in U.S. dollars or to exchange money before arriving in the United States.

Parking Information:

Parking on the campus of the University is tight, and additionally there are plenty of places for shopping and dining within convenient walking distance. You may wish to choose a hotel within walking distance - such hotels are indicated on our accommodations page. If you need to drive to campus, there is a public parking structure located on Maynard Street. The rate is approximately $0.60 - $0.80/hour. Visitor parking is also available in the Fletcher parking structure (use the Fletcher Street entrance) at an hourly rate. Additional parking information is available here. The conference will not be responsible for reimbursing parking tickets received during the conference.
