Strings 2000 - July 10-15 2000

Workstations and Internet Connections

You may use the computer workstations in the Science Learning Center (SLC) in Room 1720 on the south side of the atrium, just outside the lecture hall. To be admitted you MUST show your registration badge at the entrance desk to be assigned a workstation and given its account and password.

The SLC is available to registered Conference Participants only.
The account and password will be provided on a "station card", and only work on the computer matching the number on the station card.

Please do not forget to return your Station Card when you leave.

The SLC will be open 8:30 AM to 6:30 PM, except Wednesday afternoon when it will close at 4pm. It will be open Saturday from 8:30am until 1:30pm. It will be open Saturday from 8:30 AM until 1:30 PM.

The SLC has 68 Apple Macintosh workstations and 6 Dell workstations running Windows. After logging in, you may launch telnet or an ssh connection (NiftyTelnet on the Macs or putty on the Dells) and/or the Netscape browser. We have set up a special Strings 2000 website at "http://feynman.physics.lsa.umich.edu/strings2000/welcome.html". There you will find information and links to your favorite physics sites such as xxx at Los Alamos or SPIRES at SLAC.

Ghostview is available for viewing postscript files, as well as Adobe Acrobat Reader for viewing pdf files. Either will be launched automatically from the browser when needed. If you run into problems using the workstations, see one of the local organizers, in particular, Eric Myers, Jim Liu, or Marty Einhorn.

Note that, to simplify computer support and to keep our expenses from mushrooming, PRINTERS WILL NOT BE AVAILABLE to conference participants. Sorry.

If you have special computing needs RELATED TO CONFERENCE ATTENDANCE, such as preparation of transparencies for your talk, please consult one of the local organizers.
